How accurate are AI music detectors?

AI music detectors often advertise very high accuracy — some cite 99%+ on benchmark sets. Those numbers are real but conditional. Understanding what they measure helps you use detection responsibly instead of treating any score as gospel.

What "accuracy" really measures

Headline accuracy is usually measured on curated datasets of clean, untouched generations versus human recordings. Academic work like the SONICS dataset (97k+ songs, including 49k synthetic tracks from Suno and Udio) showed that modeling long-range temporal patterns matters a lot for real songs — and that performance shifts as generators evolve.

  • False positive rate matters as much as accuracy — wrongly flagging a human track is costly for creators.
  • A model trained on Suno can miss Udio, and a model trained on v4 can stumble on v5.
  • Post-processing, compression, and hybrid human+AI tracks all lower confidence.
Even platforms admit detection isn’t perfect — Spotify has said third-party tools still make a "material amount of incorrect assessments." That is why results are probabilities.

How to read a confidence score

Treat detection as a screening layer. A high AI score is a strong signal to investigate, not an automatic conviction. An "uncertain" result genuinely means uncertain — common for tracks that mix human performance with AI tools. For important decisions, combine the score with context: the source, the stems, and the creator’s history.

Why ensembles win

Single-classifier detectors are fragile. Ensembles run multiple independent checks and apply gating logic, so one strong forensic red flag can override a "sounds-real" surface impression — and false positives drop. That is the approach Songprint uses, and why it reports the signals behind each verdict, not just a number.
